A sales plan sets how much the business will sell in the year, how that figure splits across months, sales reps and products, and how results will be measured. In this sales plan template you enter each month's sales from last year and a growth rate, and the monthly target is calculated with a seasonal factor; then you enter actual sales to see achievement and a year-end forecast. The Printable sales plan tab puts the figures, goals and actions into one document.

In brief

In the example the annual target is SAR 2,603,700.00 at 10% growth. By September, actual sales were SAR 1,844,000.00 against a target of SAR 1,905,200.00, or 96.8% achievement, and the year-end forecast is SAR 2,553,661.00, SAR 50,039.00 short of target.

What a sales plan and sales target are

A sales target is the figure management commits to selling in a set period, and the plan splits it by who sells, what is sold and when. That split turns one annual number into monthly goals each rep knows his share of, so incentives and commission can rest on it and a shortfall shows up in its own month rather than in December.

Steps to prepare an annual sales plan

  1. Enter each month's sales from last year, taken from your books or system, excluding VAT in both years.
  2. Switch to advanced mode, set the target growth rate in the calculation settings, and adjust the seasonal factor for months when demand rises.
  3. Split the target across reps in the Sales reps sheet with shares that add up to 100%, and across product categories in the Products sheet.
  4. Open Printable sales plan, write the goals and actions, and download the plan.

The seasonal factor lifts months when demand in Saudi Arabia rises: Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and back to school. The Hijri calendar moves about 11 days earlier each year, so move the factor to the Gregorian month the season falls in during your plan year. Example: March sold SAR 240,000; at 10% growth and a factor of 1.15, its target is SAR 303,600.00.

The sales plan in Excel keeps target, achievement and forecast as live formulas that update with the growth rate, and the sales plan template as a PDF is the written plan for management, with a blank copy to fill in by hand.

Tracking the target and achievement rate

At the end of each month enter the actual figure. It is compared with the target for the months closed so far, not the full year, and a month or rep below 95% is highlighted.

FigureFormulaFrom the example
AchievementActual ÷ target for the same months1,844,000 ÷ 1,905,200 = 96.8%
Rep achievementRep's actual ÷ (share × target of months closed)Nawaf: 259,000 ÷ 285,780 = 90.6%
Next month's forecastLast year's sales × seasonal factor × actual growth trendOctober: SAR 206,752.00 at 11.8% actual growth

The sales forecast keeps actual sales as they are and estimates the remaining months from your real growth trend. The gap between forecast and annual target is the early warning: in the example a projected shortfall of SAR 50,039.00 can still be closed in the last quarter with an offer for new outlets or more visits to the largest customers, while leaving it to December makes it final. A month under 95% needs a written reason and an action at the next monthly meeting.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing the annual target by 12, so Ramadan looks like a big win and summer like a failure.
  • Rep shares that do not add up to 100%.
  • Measuring mid-year achievement against the full annual target, so 50% looks like falling behind.
  • Recording sales including VAT one year and excluding it the next.

Linking the plan to invoices and sales reps

When actual sales are copied by hand from invoices and rep sheets every month, the report runs late and departments disagree on the numbers. Microtec offers Microtec accounting software covering sales, purchasing, inventory and finance for businesses in Saudi Arabia, and a field sales and distribution system for reps.

Sales plan FAQs

How do I set a realistic sales target?

Start from last year's sales month by month and add growth that a specific step justifies: a new branch, more outlets, or a new product line. Growth with no action behind it is a number that gets written and not reached.

Should the target be split evenly across months?

No. It follows each month's sales last year times the seasonal factor. Example: February sold SAR 165,000; at 10% growth and a factor of 1.10, its target is SAR 199,650.00, while dividing by 12 gives every month the same figure.

How often should I review the sales plan?

Review achievement at the start of each month after entering actuals, and the plan itself every quarter. If the forecast stays far from target for two quarters in a row, change the actions, or the target if the market has changed.

How do I link the sales plan to rep commission?

Tie commission to each rep's achievement rate in the Sales reps sheet rather than raw sales, so a rep who beats his share in a small territory is rewarded. The business sets the tiers, such as a higher rate above 100% and no extra commission under 90%.

Can I download the sales plan template as a PDF?

Yes. The Printable sales plan tab downloads as a PDF or in Word with goals, monthly targets, reps and actions, along with a blank form to fill in by hand.
