This sales commission calculator works out what a rep earns on net sales: enter the period's sales, the returns against them and the rate your company pays, and the commission appears in Saudi riyals with the working shown. The Tiered tab handles stepped rates under both methods companies use, and the On collections tab pays only on cash that actually came in. Advanced mode adds a target threshold and a table for several reps that downloads as an Excel sheet with live formulas.
How to calculate sales commission at a flat rate
Take the returns off first and apply the rate to what is left. Paying on gross sales hands the rep commission on goods that came back to the warehouse.
Commission = (Sales − Returns) × Rate
No Saudi regulation sets a commission rate. Each company writes its own into the commission policy or the rep's contract, and it usually moves with product margin. Every rate in the calculator is therefore yours to enter; the figures shown on first load are an illustration.
Tiered commission rates on sales
Tiered commission pays a higher rate as sales grow, to push reps past the minimum. There are two ways to apply the tiers and they give very different numbers, so the policy should name the one it means.
| Tier | From (SAR) | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| First | 0 | 2% |
| Second | 50,000 | 3% |
| Third | 100,000 | 5% |
The second method jumps at every threshold. Net sales of SAR 99,000 sit in the second tier and earn SAR 2,970.00 at 3%; SAR 100,000 earns SAR 5,000.00 at 5%. One extra thousand in sales lifted the commission by SAR 2,030, which is why reps under this method hold back or pull forward invoices to cross a line. The slab method has no jump, so moving an invoice between months gains the rep nothing.
Commission on collections, not sales
In distribution and credit sales the invoice goes out today and the cash arrives weeks later, and some of it never does. Paying on collections means the rep earns on money that reached the till or the bank in the period, less refunds to customers, so no commission is paid on a bad debt.
Enter the invoiced amount in the rep's sales field and the uncollected part shows on the bar above the result. The returns field is ignored on this tab, because what counts here is cash paid back, not the value of goods returned.
Commission tied to hitting target
Some companies pay nothing until a rep reaches a share of target. In advanced mode, enter the target and the minimum: the calculator measures achievement on net sales, sets commission to zero below the minimum, and shows what it would have been.
Commission for several reps and an Excel template
Switch on "Target condition and several reps" and enter each rep's sales and returns (or collections and refunds on that tab); each rep is calculated with the method you chose and the total appears underneath. With three reps at 3%: Omar SAR 3,360.00, Priya SAR 2,775.00 on net sales of 92,500, James SAR 1,920.00, for a total of SAR 8,055.00.
The Download Excel button gives you the statement as a working commission template: one cell for the rate or a small tier table, a net column and a commission column per rep, so next month you add a rep or change a figure without coming back to the calculator.
What commission means and when it is paid
Commission is variable pay given to a sales rep or agent as a percentage of sales or collections, on top of a fixed salary or instead of one. In the books it is a selling expense in the period it is earned. The contract or commission policy should say how it is calculated and when it is paid, including whether it is net of returns and whether it is clawed back if an invoice is cancelled after payout.
Common mistakes when calculating commission
- Paying on sales including VAT. The VAT goes to the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority; commission belongs on the amount before it.
- Forgetting returns that arrive after the commission was paid, so they are never deducted the following month.
- Mixing the two tier methods in one statement, with one rep on slabs and a colleague on the whole-amount method.
- Paying on a "collection" that is really a transfer between the same customer's accounts, not new cash.
What to do after the result
Go through the statement with the sales manager before payout, then attach it to the payroll run or the payment voucher. Download the PDF for sign-off, or the Excel file to keep as a monthly sheet you update. The Share link button carries the rates and tiers, so the manager opens the calculator with the same settings.
When reps sell today and collect next month
As the number of reps and credit customers grows, tracking what each one sold, collected and took back becomes daily work, and every slip lands in the month-end commission run. At Microtec we build O-Orange for field sales and distribution companies in the Kingdom. Put one or two reps on the trial before you decide.
